Elder Abuse is often described as a silent epidemic. Victims are often too intimidated or embarrassed to reach out and observers don’t want to get involved. One study reports only 1 in 15 cases of elder abuse is reported. This means many victims suffer in silence. An estimated 2,160 older Lake County adults experience abuse, neglect or exploitation each year.

The Association of Specialists in Aging and the Lake County Council on Aging are hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Event at the Willoughby Hills Community Center at 2:30pm on Tuesday, June 12th.  A panel of potential mandated reporters will be on hand to discuss how to prevent and report elder abuse, neglect and exploitation. In September, Ohio Law is expanding the list of people and professions that are Mandated Reporters of Elder Abuse. No reservation is required to attend. For more information please call 440-358-1600.
