John Craig

1998

John Craig has been a resident of Mentor and a member of the Mentor Plains United Methodist Church since 1956. In that time he has been a church trustee, administrative board member, usher, food bank volunteer, and building caretaker.

Because of Mr. Craig’s devotion to his faith and residents in his community, he helped form an alliance between his church and the Lake County Council on Aging to create the area’s only Meals-on-Wheels Nutrition Site in 1996. Today, more than 70 clients are checked on daily as they receive hot, nutritious meals and a friendly greeting. As a volunteer at the meal site, John spends 80 hours a month packing meals, driving routes, and recruiting volunteers.

In 1997, Mr. Craig was the first person in Lake County to receive the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging’s Volunteer of the Year Award. That same year he was selected as the Outstanding Senior of the Year for the Mentor Nutrition Site and was a semi-finalist for the statewide Mannix Hall of Honor.
