Lake County Council on Aging is seeking an energetic and committed early-riser to work in a fast-paced environment to receive deliveries, heat and serve food, and clean and maintain kitchen equipment in a senior nutrition facility. Must have prior food service experience and/or willing to learn safe food handling, hygiene / communicable disease prevention practices. Must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to follow instructions. Position requires basic reading, intermediate computer and math skills, and ability to work with volunteers. Position requires frequent 20+ pound lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods of time. In addition,

High level of computer skill with Microsoft applications is critical to be considered for Assistant position.

Assist Lunch Site Coordinator and be able to handle the following tasks

  • Data Entry of new congregate clients into PEERPLACE.
  • Daily record congregate  meals units of service into PEERPLACE
  • Daily record Home Delivered Meals units of service into PEERPLACE
  • Keep current menu, portion control sheet, and heating instructions for food posted
  • Assist with route sheet changes, weekly meal reports, monthly summary reports,
  • congregate meal counts, counting and banking of donations, etc.
  • Assist in supervision and training of volunteers directly related to food service
  • Answer phone, record messages, fax important information to agency office
  • Make changes to daily route sheet when necessary and contact substitute drivers if needed

Coordinate the food service at lunch site

  • Review with site coordinator and nutrition aide(s) on a daily basis any updates/changes to food menu
  • Maintain volunteer schedule and call to arrange for substitutes as needed
  • Assist with meal packing and portion control of food each day
  • Ensure that the kitchen is compliant with health department standards and rules
  • Inform volunteers of changes with routes and agency policies or procedures
  • Provide training to nutrition aide(s) and volunteer workers as needed
  • Assist nutrition aides with counting and temping of food
  • Contact area agency and/or supervisor in a timely manner to report shortages or spoilage of food
  • Monitor and order supplies as needed to efficiently run the site
  • Assist in set-up of the site, greeting clients, and cleaning the site

Preparation of kitchen                                                                                  

  • Responsible to check working condition and maintain all kitchen appliances
  • Receive food delivered by caterer, check quantity and quality
  • Receive and check supplies and store supplies in the proper manner
  • Ensure proper refrigeration of all foods and supplies

Preparation of food

  • Heat food to proper temperature and record results
  • Package hot food in the proper containers for home delivered meals
  • Package cold items in paper bags
  • Help volunteers count necessary containers for the meal delivery each day
  • Prepare and serve food for congregate and HDM meals by heating to proper temperature and record results

Be of general assistance to the department or agency

  • Educate volunteers in health and safety regulations and provide clients with nutrition
  • related materials as needed.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings and training
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Candidates must pass comprehensive background check

Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday & Thursday.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $10.00 /hour
