Staying Safe

There are several programs available to help older adults stay safe at home.

In-Home Safety Services

As part of the Council on Aging’s client assessment process, trained case managers conduct in-home safety checks by touring the home and noting any potential safety hazards. They then make recommendations for needed safety modifications or equipment. If consumers are unable to arrange for the equipment and/or labor involved in the modifications, the Council on Aging’s handyman will provide both on a sliding-fee scale. Examples of modifications include installation of grab bars and handrails, placement of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, hand-held showers, replacement of light bulbs, and step repair.

Vial of Life Program

Emergency personnel are provided with crucial medical information at the time of crisis. After completing the necessary steps, you will be given a vial of important medical information to place on your refrigerator. This information will be available in case of an emergency.  For an overview of this program, watch the video to the left.  This video was created by the city of Mentor.

To apply for this program, give us a call at 440-205-8111 or use the form below to submit your information to us. We will then contact you to start the process of creating a vial of life.
