Lake County Council on Aging Senior Nutrition Programs

Food insecurity and social isolation are threats to our senior neighbors. The Lake County Council on Aging supports seniors’ desire to remain safe and independent in their own home. Providing home delivered and dine-in meals is one of the agency’s largest efforts in helping them remain in their neighborhood.

Eligible clients are Lake County residents 60+ years old (including spouse or dependent child) who are somewhat homebound and are unable to obtain groceries or prepare meals themselves for various reasons. A social worker will conduct a comprehensive assessment and nutrition risk survey annually. Referrals for additional services may be made as necessary.

Meals on Wheels
(Home Delivered Meals)

Lake County Council on Aging nutrition programs are funded by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging through the Older Americans Act, Lake County Senior Services Levy, United Way of Lake County, grants, client donations, and community contributions.

Meals on Wheels

Compassionate volunteer drivers deliver hot meals and a warm smile daily from one of our five community kitchens between the hours of 10:30 am and 12:30 pm Monday through Friday. An option to receive two frozen meals to heat for the weekend is offered. Menus are approved by a dietitian to provide a minimum of one-third of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) and meet the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The Lake County Council on Aging is a member of Meals on Wheels America, a nonprofit organization which promotes education, information and advocacy for America’s senior residents. The More Than a Meal Pilot Research Study, conducted by Brown University and funded by AARP Foundation, demonstrated that home delivered meals improve overall health, reduce anxiety and depression, decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation, and help seniors feel more safe and confident about living in their own home.

Clients are offered an opportunity to make a voluntary, anonymous donation to help defray meal costs. Clients will receive monthly statements identifying the number of meals delivered and an envelope to use to submit donations. The suggested donation amount is $2.50 per meal; however no client is denied meals due to inability to contribute.

The Council on Aging also offers a dine-in lunch program at the Lunch Place at four local Lake County seniors centers in Eastlake, Madison, Painesville and Wickliffe. Click here for more information on the Lunch Place.
