Martha Setlock

Martha Setlock, 67, goes above and beyond the “call of duty” when working for the American Legion Auxiliary programs that benefit veterans, children, schools and the community.  Martha says she could not do any of the activities without the members of Palmer-Roberts American Legion Auxiliary Unit 214; yet, the members feel that Martha’s leadership, guidance and hands-on approach make things happen.  Food drives for families in need have taken place the past four years, raising over $5000 for the cause and ensuring that five to seven families each year have the essentials they need.  As a former teacher, Martha makes sure that needy children in the Willoughby school district have the school supplies and back packs that they need.  Teachers at each Willoughby school are recognized for National Education and Teacher Appreciation Weeks with certificates, cookies and fruit.  Martha is instrumental in organizing programs for veterans, including visits to the VA Hospitals.  Martha has orchestrated the “Martha’s Drive for 100 Pair of Athletic Shorts.”  These shorts were adapted so that wounded servicemen and women with prosthetics, braces, casts, burns and nerve damage can wear them.

Presently, Martha serves as President American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 214, where she has been a member since 1999.  She is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2300 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW #4358.  Martha also finds time to work as a poll worker and a volunteer in the City of Willoughby’s Recreation department for the annual Easter egg hunt.

Since 2005, Martha has received numerous awards from the National American Legion Auxiliary for articles she has written, as well as public relations work she has done on the subject of patriotism.
