Kitty Funk

1995

When people think of our next inductee they invariably use these words to describe her… warm, supportive, determined, creative, and giving. I’m speaking of Kitty Funk.

Kitty has spent her whole life serving people and working hard, starting as a teenager when she took over the care of her family’s household after the death of her mother.

Her willingness to pitch in and her determination to meet a challenge, while creating a relaxed atmosphere around her of fun, happiness, and understanding have made Kitty a valuable member the Mentor Senior Center.

Kitty is one of the most active members and her contributions are evident in the Mentor Music Makers. She serves as stage manager, as well as writer and memorable solo performer. At the age of 90 Kitty is one of the founding members and mainstays of the newly formed Mentor Senior Players.

She is well-loved by elementary school children as a story teller and thinks nothing of dressing up as Mrs. Claus.

Parades have been one of Kitty’s most fulfilling and time consuming activities for years. Since 1936 Kitty has been involved with the planning and constructing of huge awe inspiring floats. With her nephew, Kitty has been the driving force behind the Mentor Senior Center’s award winning parade entries.

She has always been willing to pitch in and lend a hand when needed. No matter what she is doing, Kitty gives with a big heart and a sense of humor, and she inspires the people around her to do the same. Although she has lived with lots of adversity and challenges she has always kept a smile on her face and never gives up.
