Jim & Sally McIndoe

2005

Jim (73) and Sally (71) McIndoe, epitomize what it means to put others first before oneself by the way they live and serve others. For the past 5 years, Jim and Sally have delivered meals to Council on Aging clients through the agency’s Meals on Wheels program out of the Eastlake Nutrition Site. Together, for the past 10 years, the McIndoes have volunteered at local and general election polls and have been precinct judges at a few sites in Willoughby.

Before retirement, Jim was both a teacher and administrator for the Willoughby-Eastlake Schools for 30 years. In addition to joining his wife in the above mentioned programs, Jim has served as a volunteer tax-aid counselor and preparer for AARP tax counseling service, as well as being a tax instructor to other preparers who provide this tax advice service to seniors. Mr. McIndoe was a Red Cross blood donor for over 30 years, including donating blood platelets to cancer patients in the Apheresis Program until he was stricken with a life threatening form of cancer three years ago. He became a survivor and has beaten the odds, finding great satisfaction in helping others.

After retiring from a 25-year career as a kindergarten teacher at Brentmoor Elementary School in Mentor, Sally volunteered her time to read to school age children there. In addition, she was a tutor in the “Ohio Reads” Program.

Jim and Sally received the Outstanding Senior Citizens Award through the Council on Aging Eastlake Nutrition Site, presented to them by the county commissioners at the 2002 Lake County Senior Day. The McIndoes are members of the Lake County Retired Teachers’ Association where they were co-presidents from 2000-2002 and presently are members of the association’s Travel Committee. They are lifetime members of the Ohio Retired Teachers’ Association.
