James Peters has personally committed himself to helping the needy residents of Willowick and Eastlake through the Willowick Kiwanis Food Bank since 1985. Mr. Peters’ efforts in maintaining the Willowick Kiwanis Food Bank have been truly outstanding. Every week, he volunteers between 20- 30 hours of his time securing food donations from area grocery stores and businesses in western Lake County , ordering the USDA surplus commodities, and arranging for the delivery and storage of these donated items. Mr. Peters is also instrumental in collecting food from the annual Stamp Out Hunger drive sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service for the Willowick area.

With help from his wife, Patty , and other Kiwanis Club volunteers, Mr. Peters sorts the food donations and packs approximately 50 baskets to be distributed by the Kiwanis Club each month to needy families in Willowick and Eastlake. Food is also distribute to seniors through the Willowick Senior Citizens Center and the Wick- Willo Lunch Site on a daily basis. As director, Mr. Peters monitors the Kiwanis Club Food Bank telephone line to answer emergency calls for food from the Salvation Army, City Hall, local churches, and social service agencies.

Mr. Peters’ work in the Kiwanis Club Food Bank has been recognized by the Ohio District of Kiwanis International as an outstanding community service project.
