Gwen G. King

2001

Gwen G. King is one of the founders of the Indian Museum of Lake County and has been the director for twenty years. Mrs. King has dedicated 25 years of her life to the Indian Museum without any thought of payment or recognition by volunteering over 28,000 hours to the museum and its programs. Through her work, the general public, especially school children, have had the opportunity to learn of our early history and Native American culture through exhibits, tours, stories, and hands-on activities. She is also the author of two published books on Ohio Indians.

Mrs. King was an active participant in the archaeological dig at the Reeve Village Site on the Chagrin River in Eastlake, which led to the formation of the Lake County Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio. She served as President and Secretary of the chapter prior to the inception of the museum in 1980.

Mrs. King has been recognized by being awarded the YMCA Unsung Hero Award in 1970, Concord Township Citizen of the Year Award in 1986, and the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award in 1998. She also has been honored by the Lake County Commissioners for her outstanding dedication to all the citizens of Lake County.
