Charles Koelble

1997

Charles (Chuck) Koelble came to Lake County in 1978, joining the editorial department of The News Herald where he served until retirement in 1991. During his tenure at the newspaper, he served as Sunday Editor and Community Editor. He wrote a column, “They Tell Me”, which highlighted groups, clubs, organizations, but most importantly individuals.

During his writing career, Chuck became involved in community activities, assuming leadership roles in many. He became well-known not only through his editorial efforts but by being in the public eye.

In 1984, Chuck was awarded the Lake County Bar Association’s coveted Liberty Bell Award, and in 1986 he was the first recipient of the Lake County Football Coaches Associations Appreciation Award. Four years earlier, he was among the charter and founding members of the Lake County Touchdown Club which he has served as secretary/treasurer almost since inception. He also helped form the Lake County Basketball Club in 1993 and the Lake County Baseball Club in 1995.

Following retirement, Koelble served as an honorary co-chairman for a successful Mentor Public Library operating levy campaign in 1992, and in both 1993 and 1996 served as co-chair for likewise successful Lake County Senior Services Levy Coalition.

Koelble served on the United Way of Lake County board during the early 1980’s. He is also a member of the advisory board of Birthright. Other involvement’s include the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, and Catholic Services.

Three years ago, he accepted a request to serve as host of the Council on Aging’s Generations, which currently appears thrice weekly on MediaOne, covering topics for those “growing up and growing older in Lake County”.

A native of Canton, Ohio, Koelble and his wife, Peg, marked 48 years of marriage in April. They have five children and nine grandchildren.
