Calvin Fissell

1996

Calvin Fissell has taken it upon himself to lead the charge in the battle against Parkinson’s Disease. After being diagnosed with the disease a number of years ago, Mr. Fissell has organized and presided over a network of support groups in Northeastern Ohio for other Parkinson’s patients and families to utilize.

From his basement office, Mr. Fissell uses his computer equipment, phones, and resources to run the Northeastern Ohio Parkinson’s Support Groups. This organization’s purpose is to ensure that there are support groups nearby for anyone that needs information and assistance in dealing with Parkinson’s Disease.

Mr. Fissell arranges educational workshops, schedules support group meetings, and publishes a newsletter for those suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. He does all of this with very little financial support for program expenses.

Nominator Rimas Jasinevicius, Executive Director of the Lake County Council on Aging says, “Without Cal’s commitment and hard work, there would literally be nothing available locally for those with Parkinson’s Disease”.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder for which there is currently no cure. More than a million people in the U.S. have it, with more than 100,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
