Where Would You Choose to Retire?

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

It’s everyone’s dream to retire to Florida or Arizona or somewhere else where the sun shines daily and the temperatures never go much below 70, right? You might want to think again.

A growing number of retirees are heading for what many of us would think of as cold or dreary environments. They cite reasons such as wanting to experience four seasons each year, reducing their cost of living, living in a culturally rich community, and feeling safe and secure. They believe these factors far outweigh the benefits of constant sun and warm temperatures.

Among the destinations that are making the list of best places for retirees are Camden, Maine; Durango, Colorado; the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound; Asheville, North Carolina; and towns along upper Lake Michigan. Many of these destinations have unique downtowns, are easily walkable, and are quite picturesque. So if you’re thinking of retiring, you might want to investigate these and similar areas to find your ideal location.
